Most Common Medical Uses
Ultram is an analgesic most commonly used to treat or moderate
to severe prevent pain. It may also be used to treat other conditions
as determined by your doctor.
How to Take This Medication
Take Ultram exactly as directed by your doctor. Take each dose
with a full glass of water. Ultram can be taken with or without
food.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects, that may go away during treatment, include
dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, headache,
or sweating. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your
doctor. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience
skin rash, itching, seizures, or hallucinations. Side effects
may be decreased by a slow decrease in dose, as directed by your
doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact
your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
Precautions
Do not exceed the recommended dose or take this medicine for longer
than prescribed. Seizures have been reported as a rare side effect
of treatment with Ultram. Talk to your doctor about factors that
may increase the risk of seizures during treatment. If you experience
difficulty breathing or tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids,
face, or lips; or develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately.
Avoid alcohol while you are using this medicine. This medicine
will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ultram
may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when driving, operating
machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. If you experience
dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. For women: if
you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits
and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. Do not breast-feed
while taking this medicine. This medicine is excreted in breast
milk.
Drug Interactions
Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription
or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist . Seizures
have been reported as a rare side effect of treatment with Ultram.
The risk of seizures may be increased in patients who have certain
conditions or are taking medications such as: tricyclic antidepressants,
monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or certain psychiatric medications.
Do not take Ultram without first talking to your doctor.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible.
If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose
and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses
at once.
Storage
Store this medicine at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees
F (15 and 30 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from
heat and light. Keep this and all medications out of the reach
of children.
Notes
Do not share Ultram with others for whom it was not prescribed,
since they may have a problem that is not effectively treated
by this drug. Ultram is not approved by the FDA for use by children
younger than 16 years of age. Do not use this medicine for other
health conditions.
